Students who wish to pursue an LLB/BA (Law) degree in the UK or any other country should carefully check the recognition of the qualifications from the Bar Council of India (BCI). This is especially important if students wish to practice in India after completing their professional degree at a foreign university.

The Bar Council recognizes the first legal degree only from those countries which recognize the Indian equivalent degrees.

Indian nationals with a degree in law from BCI recognized foreign universities can only be enrolled to practice as a lawyer or solicitor in India. The recognition of the international legal degree may be subject to further conditions that the candidate may have to pass additional eligibility examinations prescribed by the BCI.

Admissions to post-graduate programmes are competitive, based on high marks in the LLB degree programme, usually a first class. Students may apply to each university and there is no limit to the number of applications. There are no additional examinations needed in Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, except proof of English through the IELTS. The institutions in USA require aspirants to take a specialized law entrance test or the GRE.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree, all accredited law schools require applicants to take the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) for admission. This half-day test provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills. It is administered four times a year at hundreds of locations around the world. For most law schools, you will need to have taken the test no later than the December before the fall in which you wish to enter.
