Four out of seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have slipped in the QS World University Rankings this year against last year. QS ranks 500 institutions across the world. IIT-Bombay, which has been ranked the top most among 10 Indian institutions, fell 24 places to 187 this year. It was ranked 163 last year. if(document.getElementById("ad_in_arti")){OAS_AD('x15');} IIT-Delhi, too, slipped 21 notches to secure 202 position against 181 last year, while IIT-Guwahati fell from 401 to 501 this year."We see these rankings as feedback of how others see our institution. While these rankings do not really impact our behaviour as an institute, we w   ...

A young man with an unusually happy disposition once came to meet me in Jerusalem. I asked him, "What's your secret?"He told me, "When I was 11 years old, God gave me a gift of happiness. I was riding my bicycle when a strong gust of wind blew me onto the ground into the path of an oncoming truck. The truck ran over me and cut off my leg."As I lay there bleeding, I realized that I might have to live the rest of my life without a leg. How depressing! But then I realized that being depressed won't get my leg back. So I decided right then and there not to waste my life despairing."When my parents arrived at the hospital they were   ...

First and most important is to have confidence in yourself.Don’t lose that confidence while preparing for the entrance exams even if you are not doing well in the coaching classes. Having mentioned about coaching classes,I would say they play an important role in helping you crack the exam. The simple reason being continued guidance throughout the year and perpetual tests that keep you in touch with course all the time.Hence it is important to be regular in them to be able to achieve good results in the end. At home prepare a time table and follow it strictly.Don’t ignore it. Don’t get too involved with only engineering books and   ...

A decade ago, booking train tickets during vacations could have easily topped the list of most tedious yet necessary tasks, thanks to the never-ending queues at the booking counters. Though the queues have got even longer rather than disappear, the advent of the internet technologies has made the task much easier.  With the internet, mundane and time-consuming tasks such as booking tickets have become merely a matter of a few clicks on the keyboard of your computer. With the introduction of online services in the mutual fund (MF) and insurance industry, investors can purchase MFs and policies through online.  Most asset management companies and i   ...

Thermodynamics-Entropy   IntroductionEntropy is a measure of the quality of energy and how usable it is....Entropy (S)is very difficult to visualise because it does not represent anything tangible.   The entropy increase δS is the heat transfer to a substance δQ divided by the absolute temperature of the substance (T) during a reversible heat-transfer process.   At the very simplest level , on a plot of Absolute Temperature (T) against Entropy (Q/T = S) for a reversible cyclic process (as shown below) the area enclosed = Q Note: The reversible cyclic p   ...

) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday."Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking   ...

How do you worship nature when you're not worshiping nature. What are your unconscious icons, the gods of your unholy acts?Every day industrial icons are fed into our lives, even if we are Veegan, cyclists with organic gardens and compost piles, living in solar houses made from sustainably harvested timber. Even if you offer a room share for VEGETARIANS WITHOUT TV'S ONLY, everybody lives downstream. Industrial icons like dioxin and uranium are in all the streams at this point anyway.Separatism's been done and it doesn't work. Every invocation of the powers of nature is a condemnation of the acts that are slowly killing our connections to t   ...

Education builds the man so it builds the nation. Today we claim to be the biggest human resources supplier for the world, but are we concerned what quality of human capital we are building and for whose needs? We supply bureaucrats to the government, software engineers to the IT companies around the world, highly paid managers to the multinationals, we supply engineers and science graduates as researchers to the foreign universities. What capital are we building for ourselves?India aspires to be powerful, it wants to play a role in the international community, for that to happen, its economy has to grow multifold and for that to happen, it requires a huge for   ...

IITJEE …..Hmm ……how many days left…?Count yourself…Those who are thinking that it's impossible to crack JEE in 5 months here is a short, true story about a boy who was able to crack JEE by preparing sincerely for 3 months itself. There was a boy named Anirudh who woke up on a day when IITJEE forms were out. It was November.Anirudh was regretting about the time he wasted. He was not at all prepared for JEE.Not even the basics. But the positive thing about Anirudh was that he never gave up and said to himself that "there is no gain without pain". I will crack JEE in 4 months of preparations. You won't believe guys he k   ...

First of all, whenever somebody has any ambition or aim to do something, he or she should be confident to do that thing, means never lose HOPE.FOR IIT-JEE: For the preparation of IIT-JEE, you have to clear & enhance your CONCEPTS. All you have to go through more and more CONCEPTS.Whenever somebody prepares for IIT-JEE, just always be with THREE THINGS:>First is: BUILDING THE CONCEPTS,>Second is: PROPER APPLICATIONS OF CONCEPTS &>Third is: PRACTICE.Here remember, I stressed on the word 'PROPER'. In Physics, building CONCEPTS is not a tougher job but building RIGHT (PROPER) CONCEPTS is much tougher. Out of every 20 students, I guarantee, that   ...
